Rick Bull aka Deepchild presents his 20th digital release with "Baller": a powerful broken-deep-techno stomper. Australian-born, formerly Berlin-based Deepchild maintains a fierce reputation as one of the Antipode's great sons of techno from his 2007 Berlin debut at the city's legendary Berghain/Panoramabar (the first of many performances there), to commanding thousands at EXIT Festival, Detroit DEMF and more, a stunning international reputation precedes him. Tenacious, muscular Dj-ing and live performance are fortified by an expansive catalogue of releases and remixes on labels as diverse as Get Physical Music, BBE, Sleaze, Leisure System and Future Classic. Deepchild is also one half of the Juno Award-nominated duo, Concubine, adding to several previous dance music awards and nominations of his own. We got in touch with him more than a year ago as we consider him as one of the greatest producers of this kind of very modern deep techno and as always, it took some time to find a perfect selection to us. Rick has a huge discography and experience of electronic music behind him yet he has followed quite an unconventional path. This new release best exemplifies the depth of his creativity and skill amassed over many years of prolific output. It is raw, distorted, broken-beat techno with harassing drums and roaring sub-bass yet it feels more accessible and more easy-listening than most techno cuts released these days, it contains an undescribable magic which is what we loved in these tracks: as detailed as the greatest deep techno records yet as catchy as a radio track. Maybe the fact that this man derives his influences and inspirations from beyond the very idealistic underground scene has helped him to achieve this very special sound. Deepchild has recently moved a lot between Australia, the US and Berlin recently and rather than focussing on a special scene or temporary trend (which still exist even in so-called very underground communities) but more on a worldwide electronic music scene. Somehow the music he makes today is the result of these moves and the merging of many influences. "Basement supply" has a unique versatility that makes it playable in a berliner techno set at 8AM as well as being perfect for a movie trailer. It's all about the structure: almost radio in the approach yet completely underground in the sound.. That's where each of these tunes find their strength.. You can enjoy playing them on your phone walking in the city and then hammer a techno dancefloor with them. Second seduction on the other hand is probably more subtle and hypnotic than "Basement Supply" and "Baller" but has the same modern sound and distinctive depth. Whether on his Deepchild productions, Concubine side-project or live-act, you can hear that this man's output defies a particular genre or sound.
