about

Rennie Foster gets back on Goldmin Music with a new EP titled Glacial Empire, delivered in a trio of versions from Rennie Foster starting with the original piece aside a beat driven tape dub and an ambient version, Glacial Dawn. Three more deft remixes come from EinKa, whos Leaving Alone To Summit album was still a work in progress, yet titled already, when the Canadian producer sent him his track. The fact that Rennie was also up for his very own description of an icy realm instantly appealed. Living in Pacific Northwest Canada, Rennie is familiar with flights over The Rockies and sees the supernatural mountains of Cypress and Grouse from his studio window. Vancouver's area is not only about mountains though, it is also a very urban area where distant summits in the background are mixed with the twinkling of distant city lights. This panoramic contrast made himself think of the whole area where he dwells appearing as a glacial empire. Music-wise, Rennie's approach is catchy and upfront, yet melancholic, and there's also a bit of that up there lost in the mountains. The original is that kind of melodic, driven tune you can hardly resist, even for those adverse to melody. There are far enough melodies everywhere, it's the easy attraction and addiction to general music addicts who like to look at sunsets with shivers but only a very few artists can use them to sound so impactful. Rennie is part of them. Glacial Tape Dub is, as mentioned, a dub version and everything melodic is stripped down on that version and attention is turned rather onto rhythmic details showing how the drums cope without much else. Glacial Dawn is the original mix for the ones not so much into kicks but is not only a beatless version but rather a full and expanded ambient song. While EinKa was amazed by the whole original track in itself and it's impeccable building structure, he was even especially attracted to these heavenly lead sounds coming during the first two minutes and EinKa's initial version focused on these beloved sounds. La Meije, a mountain in south french alps is considered as a queen, while Mont Blanc shall be king. It's a surreal summit preceded by proper glacial empires, standing 2500 meters above the small town of La Grave. His first remix is named after this mountain and tries to reflect a bit of it's intricate beauty. The second one focuses on the mineral and material aspect of a mountain, such as the collapsing rocks as they could be found on Matterhorn in Switzerland. Then, closing EinKa's Dub Remix takes a rather dissonant and squeaky way which is not so unfaithful to the sumptuous original mix. Not all versions were meant to be released first, they were intended more as attempts but in the end it was clear they were a set, each unique. It feels good to be able to show every option and direction taken during this interesting artistic collaboration.
