about

If there was one band to pick in order to define what french 80's coldwave is, X Ray Pop might be the winner. Led by Didier Pilot, inviting diverse singers to join him through the years, the band has been very active between 1984 and 1990, leaving a good amount of classics like « La Machine A Réver » and « L'eurasienne » behind them. Like many other bands from that era, they've been quieter in the nineties yet they had paved the way for many artists of the next generations. Back then, their music had been overshadowed by the stars and major labels and it was still unnoticed by a lot of people until US Dark Entries' label head Josh Cheon came across their stuff. Josh has been able to resuscitate some of their classics as well as bringing some unreleased music under X Ray Pop and Bocal 5 monikers to life for the first time. We've had the chance to meet Didier aka Doc Pilot a few years ago as we were amazed by the singularity of these absurd pop songs - cause that's what they are, after all - on top of flangered and very basic grooveboxes loops and almost ironic 8 bits synths sounds.

Their music was surprising to those who never heard of the band. It might surprise you too even if you think you've heard all of the 80's obscure scene tricks. Knowing that Goldmin is not a repress label, we had to ask Didier if he had something fresh, something that wasn't just archives but rather "X Ray Pop songs for today". Even if greatness is often timeless, there is no doubt that their classics will remain forever connected and related to the period of time when they were released. More than that, X Ray was a sort of extreme at playing that 80's game; In a way, they pushed the concept further than any other band. Just check their music videos! By doing so, they were some kind of symbol floating over the scene and escaping to any cliché that so many other bands from these days fell into. However, such crazy and emblematic attitude shall not be confined into an area that is too small for it.

This Ep is the living proof of it. The mighty "El Gato" appeared first on our 5 Years Of Goldmin Music compilation. It is a good example of how daring and adventurous their music can be. Les Filles Sur Le Fil and Capitaine Coeur De Boeuf could be called Leftfield-pop as some many genres are melting here that you can't tell if that's more about cold-wave, folk or a demo of a young girl singing with a synth in her bedroom. Who could tell when these tracks have been done? They could have been part of a beautiful 7 inch back in the 80's but they sound so current and on point that there's almost no regrets Doc had kept them backlogging in his studio for 30 years… Maybe they were meant to be released now, subconsciously and that's all for the best. You've got it, we're delighted to release this first Ep of X Ray Pop on Goldmin Music and there is more X Ray Pop to come in the near future.
