about

Jay Riordan returns on Goldmin with a full-length debut album called « Mihu ». It’s not so strange that our collaboration with the irish producer ended in an album, knowing how cinematic and soundtrack-like his first Ep « Never Alone » is, and so does his music in general.

Jay can do more than well when he’s doing more typical things and he proves it once again on such tracks as « Upright New », a brilliant electro track where he thoroughly runs a Detroit-like electro machinery, full of details and inventiveness, a kind of structure already done by many producers yet not this way. In another vein, « Ash » sounds like an updated version of what you could hear in the most brilliant soundtracks of 90’s japanese animes; Elegance combined with quite unusual, innovative samples cutting and assembling.

These tracks and each of every tracks that found a spot on Mihu sounded unique to us in a way. The album could sound like a collection, a regroupage of all the diverse and craziest things Jay has worked on.
But the whole album’s atmosphere lies into something else, an elusive consistance and link that appears discretely during the listen, a relationship betwen tracks that are built in a completely different way.

When asked, Jay said that Modeselektor, Trentemöller, Dj Rum and Soulwax were some major influences but that’s surely not a limit to what he would allow himself to do. There are hints of 90’s industrial merged with a bit of Trip hop leaking from some tracks. Also a bit of anime soundtracks, a bit of detroit, a bit of a lot of things hardly named or classified.
Basically, things you won’t find often gathered on a same record. And it doesn’t mean that Jay scatters or hesitates; If he does, it’s on purpose and with a deep willing to explore rather than locking himself into an obvious and evident position.

Maybe that’s all related with the fact that Jay’s identity is not a matter of bpm or structure, but more of a combination of techniques and ideas that can be applied and declined in various ranges of electronic music sub genres. That’s why Mihu is both a palette of everything Jay does and a long player album that is meant to be listened from beginning to end. Because of course, we had the time to think of the track order during the 2 years since when this album is planned.
