about

First one of Patrick Steger aka Paty Pat on Goldmin. We heard of this Switzerland based artist from Orlando Voorn long time ago. Paty has already had a few records out together with Orlando and on OV's own imprint Nighttripper records. He is also one of these few activists involved in more than one way, always behind the scene, and a little bit shadowed by a mass of releases and a few superstars artists. Yet he remains one of these individuals who is truly essential to our music scene and so not only by making music but also running electronic music related groups on social networks etc. Patrick is one of these european artists who sounds like Detroit, perhaps the most Detroitish Swiss guy in the world but who's paradoxically never really making Detroit techno. It's more of an atmosphere than a TR 909 or strings-like sounds after all... It conforms to Detroit and follows a certain line, yes. But it does rather sound like a fusion of Dub techno, tech house and Electro, just like some of Orlando's best work or recent Luke Hess' releases, making it very hard to fit in any sub genre box. Sub-sub genres might help. Each track is kind of "niche" and something a proper Dj would like to have in the bag but much more than that. How about that fusion in "The Scene"? It sounds like Theo Parrish at his best on top of a Jeff Mills groove? And "Landscape" which sounds like a track you've heard many times but not exactly this one, not with this bassline? Or maybe was it this one? Finally, how about the adversed winds of "Visitor", a track that would make the Panorama Bar sound like heavy sea at 10 AM? Each of these 5 tracks is a perfect dj tool and much more than a dj tool at the same time. After all, this is what Pat is really good at: showing that there is still so many tracks to be made out of the same initial germs, and showing that the very few elements Detroit techno has started still has an incredible potential of novelty and innovation. It's not just about putting synths on top of 4/4 groove box rhythms, it's about the incredible amount of "electronic" possibilities, options and potentiality that a dedicated artist comes to. Detroit surely had much more robust and healthy foundations that we might think it had and that's why it might still be "the sound of the future" in the year 2100. By the way, have we heard anything more futuristic since it's early days? Not sure... The whole Ep shows a dedicated and brilliant producer at work, oscillating between entirely rhytmical sections and high-tech sound design to define landscapes and depths. Just like a handful of other artists in Europe like Xdb, Deep'a & Biri, Thor and some others, Paty Pat gives much more than respect to the sound and the city he cherishes. He gives Detroit a future.
