Since his beginning on Perlon, sharing a 12" record with Ricardo Villalobos back in 1999, Stephan Laubner aka STL has released an incredible amount of records and albums that have established himself as an unescapable artist of the electronic music scene. Its not too hard to say why, the german artist living near Harz Mountain, has shown and developed an unparalleled and absolutely singular vision that relates as much to the grainy and material aspect of his sound than his complex homemade tones and scales which however sound like an easy and evident thing. The biggest mistake is to reduce his work to his impeccable "Silent State", a track that has left its imprint on a whole decade, yet a track that is only a link in the artists wide and broad supply chain. In fact, regardless of whether he makes his very own kind of dissonant micro dub ballads, or when he turns to things closer from dub techno, Stephan is one of the rare guys around, able to craft his music not just as a mix of instruments, but rather as a living organism with it's own landscape and rules, a place where unpredictability reigns, a musical system where the figure-ground relationship is abolished and where black and white notes collide just like lines and dots, defining a variety of unsuspected possibilities and combinations. This Ep illustrates it well and to us, it's name makes sense, the rest later.
