We're excited to welcome Gabriel Cyr aka Teleseen to Goldmin with the first of two EPs compiling some tracks from his 2015 LP “Strangers”, with remixes from several artists from the US, Brazil and France. Gabriel is based in Brooklyn, NY but has lived and worked in Brazil and various points in Africa, and his music draws influence from from these experiences, weaving threads from tropicalia, samba, and West African music, as well as the house, techno and sound system culture from his home town. “Distant Drums” began life in 2013 when Gabriel was living in Rio de Janeiro, and he was woken on a sweaty early morning during carnival by an enormous percussion group parading past his bedroom window. Half asleep he grabbed his laptop to tap out a quick approximation of the rhythm the group was playing; ending up with a sketch of something that sounded totally different, like an echo of what he had heard. After bringing the piece into the studio and reinterpreting it with a percussionist few days later, he created a track which succeeds in referencing both the samba/batucada feeling of the original overheard rhythm and the driving intensity of afro house, while maintaining the dream logic of its origins. The EP starts off with a remix of “Distant Drums” from Detroit legend Brendan Gillen aka BMG, aka Ectomorph, a man who has dedicated his life to electronic music. Ectomorph was founded in 1994 as a reaction to DBX, Basic Channel, Rob Hood and Drexciya. For this project Brendan brought in producer Scott Zacharias aka The Fantasy to work with him. Scott is Detroit's best kept secret, a true student of freeform dance music, the co-founder of both Detroit's Macho City and Disco/Secret with Mike Trombley, and the original resident of the club Oslo. Portland based dub wizard Alter Echo, of Zam Zam and BSI records brings us the send remix of Distant Drums. His version brings a darker and more industrial feeling, while maintaining the essence of the original; adding an irresistible, crumbling and almost mystical vibe to the track that won't let anyone leave the dance floor. The second original tune, "Tongues”, is remixed here by Goldmin label founder EinKa. The original tunes starts off with a very minimal, broken 4/4 groove which slowly but surely develops into a touching and addictive mix. Combining cascading synth leads with a triangle rhythm that feels almost lifted from Brazilian folk music into a sensual track, which closed out the original LP. EinKa felt the potential of this and did complete re-interpretation based on the first feeling he had listening this track, mirroring it's distinct structure. The resulting track extends the almost steamy, humid feeling of the original and takes it into almost a Balearic space, subtle yet attention grabbing.
