Martin James Took a long time to arrive with 3(?) copies going missing in the post, and then there was a wait for a repress but eventually the album arrived (without the advertised CD). BUT, huge patience paid off. What an amazing album - stunningly inventive from start to finish. Possibly my favourite album from Ian Simmonds - well worth investing in... but don't expect a prompt delivery :) Favorite track: Wham!.

Wham! 04:41
Sing along, what a pain, another strain, on an otherwise impeccable refrain . Who‘s been light at being right, it´s know wonder you cant sleep at night. Now it's been so long at being lame, which one to blame, when you all want to look and act the same. Back again, does it always rain, do you feel, do you feel this planets pain. Here comes the big guns, don't let them get you down, don't let them give you the runaround. Lookout machine guns, don't let them get you down, don't let them put you six feet in the ground. Climb to fall, on this land, the last stand, the easy money's on the rebrand. Crazy day's and tragic plays, traffic jams and one ways. Born to lose, like you choose, now who's begging for a given truth.
2.
Starry days and starry night, always wrong but one time right. Can't stay here can't stay there, watch the going's firm but fair. Oh little darling is it me, i am guilty first degree. Forgiven love , forgiven friend, i will be with you till the end. I want to write this story tell, i wanted heaven, then i fell, a long long way and into your arms where i am, want to claim but who's the man. Dried up money who will know, not one seed for me to sew. A head filled with something, filled with dreams a barren land with dried up streams. A tiny room , a big idea, i am giving mother one more year. A losing future, someone cares, rising bills and rising fares.
3.
The state 03:48
All the pain the love all the rain the steps the laughter all the please All the looks the tears all the smiles the breath the threats, all change All the tunes all the checks the forgetful forgets, the power sex and all the covers All the sun all the wind all the senses all the way, all the ravens all the crows What state are you in, fat or thin, cosmopolitan, left of her right of him Are you moving in a crowd, small or loud, proud, underneath or over ground.
4.
The joker 06:15
5.
Mindout 03:11
All alone, night breeze my home, are you out of your mind At the mid day call, no place to hide away, no place to come and stay Sand over hand, there's no sun only fire, sing into the night Dreams are forgotten and i'm working hard to wake up No place to come and stay Taking lies aint really a surprise, morning heat, it's gonna be a long day Tracking back, i almost went the wrong way, hoping you will stay.
6.
Take me to the river, where i wash in the clean water, reflecting everything around me Now the rain clouds are forming, oh how this earth needs some cleansing Reflecting everything around me, swimming up this river, reflecting everything around me Wash away this shit before me, in the sunlight of this morning, wash away the shit before me.
7.
Being burned 05:12
I got a whole list of things to talk about, i got a whole list of things to mention When it comes down to being burned, witness vanish When it comes down to being burned, truth and alibi, witness vanish.
8.
Night porter 03:25
Lift is broken again, i got to walk thirty flights yes i'm in a high riser, dangerous at nights watching all the cheap flights on top of the high riser, a great place to fly kites, if the wind is right and when the suns out it's nicer, i better call the night porter, climbing these steps is getting harder. Fat Billy from 116 say's its the last place on earth, here in the high riser His girlfriend is giving birth, hope she can keep her nerve on the edge in the high riser Never met my neighbor Better call the night porter, climbing these steps is getting harder. Know one should live like this, i have seen better in a zoo, please believe me I live in no community, i live in no society here in the high riser Should see the queue at the surgery, there giving people drugs to stop them going crazy Sitting and watching the cheap flights on top of the high rise at night. The lift stinks of piss again, i got to walk thirty flights to home in the high riser I better call the night porter, things are getting harder The breathing city at night keeps me awake till light, here in the high riser I better call the night porter. Dirty Harry at 99, checks the porn all night yet gets to work on time, catches the pain, feels the strain before he catches a cheap plane, never seen again I better call the night porter, things are getting harder.

Enough 05:02
Goodbye to my love, nice while it lasted, really bad when it ended, like a book how you read it now i try to forget it . Hello to the man, gives with one hand, takes away with the other, just like you told it, going my way i'll give you all my pennies to pay. Hello to the third party, gives me one look and turns away with the other, didn't know that i knew it who's going my way, i'll give you all my pennies to pay. Hello to the man, who kicks with one foot and tries to run with the other Just like you told it, ownership then sold it. Goodbye to this world, you know it gave me all i ever wanted It was just as you told me, tried my best to be ready. So long to those who knew me, those who heard and those who tried to help me Not about to forget you, going my way, i'll give you all my pennies to pay Goodbye to this home, was good in some ways and not so good in another Just like you told it, ownership then sold it.

about

Ian Simmonds presents his new album "The right side of kind" on Goldmin Music.

Ian Simmonds is one of the most creative Nu-Jazz/Downtempo producers of the last 20 years.
Although these words can't describe his music properly as the man is always looking for an innovative sound that could cross the boundaries of musical styles.
The Welsh-born found his inspiration in music from all over the world and his songs don't only express one clearly defined feeling. They are more of a subtle mix of emotions that let the listener interpret it his way.
As Ian said himself: "I think there's a lot of beauty in melancholy".

For example, he spent over a year living in a castle in Germany to record his last album " The Burgenland dubs" in a solitary atmosphere where he could really think, breathe, make a plan. That's the point, Ian is always re-thinking things over, looking for a new source of inspiration which results in a constant evolution.
He had the chance to collaborate both with amazing musicians like Goldfrapp and electronic music heads like Mathias Kaden, Soulphiction, Krause Duo..

6 years after his last album, this long-awaited new LP sees the man getting back to his jazzy roots along irresistible moments of innocence, a slice of drama floating over a typical sound signature that only Ian knows the secret of.

This whole life experience and amazing devotion to his music results in an outstanding album, proper Simmonds style in a quite evolving way. this is not just a collection of tunes that go along well.. This is a long-player album in the truest sense of the word.

"The right side of kind" is a personal journey. A fully conscious, almost subversive work of art that could be dedicated to the eternal dreamers, the black sheep only able to do something their own way, able to feel beauty and singularity in almost everything, even in the less significant details of daily routine despite the complexity and nonsense of the world we live in.

Ian gets to express himself in the most spontaneous and poetical way possible, as if he was thinking out loud, straight from the heart through a finely-shaded, nearly subliminal speech.
There is absolutely no certainty in this LP, not more than into this artist. Only a lot of relevant queries, a permanent questioning and this humility could be heard all along the album.

That's why the right side of kind is the kind of pieces you want to listen to from the beginning to the end, which constantly rethinks itself, where every single bar, every note is essential.. It keeps on surprising you, bringing you from the airport's high riser to the hill, from a state to another, from being burned to a new a beginning.. Yeah, a journey indeed.

This is the right side of kind.
